D. Interpreters and Translators. Rec

47 (1). A limited number of appointments to Student Interpreterships

will from time to time be made on the recommendation of the Director

of Education, Candidates shall be between the ages of sixteen and nine-

-teen years and shall have passed the examination for the fifth stand-

-ard in Grant-in-Aid Schools in Class III or the annual examination in

the fourth class in Queen's College. Importance will be attached to

their knowledge of written Chinese.

(2). Student Interpreters receive salary at the rate of 8120 a

year and they are exempt from payment of school fees. They are required

to live either with their parents or in quarters provided for them by

the Government. They are required to enter into a bond with approved

sureties in Form No. 7 appended, in the sum of $250, whereby they under-

-take:-

(a) to serve in the office of Student Interpreter, Interpreter

Translator, or Clerk in any part of the Colony of Hongkong and ita dependencies for a period of seven years from the date of appoint-

-ment.

(b) in case of dismissal on account of idleness or gross

misconduct during the period of service as Student Interpreter to

refund to the Government all sums paid by way of salary or main-

tenance, together with a sum equal to the total school fees remit-

-ted.

(3). Student Interpreters are required to take such course of

study and to attend such classes as may be prescribed by the Director

of Education. The term of study is in ordinary circumstances two years and it may be extended to three years in the case of officers who are selected as Translators. Student Interpreters who fail to qualify as Interpreters or Translators within the prescribed period are liable to

dismissal with a month's natice.

(4). Interpreters and Translators are in three classes. The qualifications necessary to obtain a certificate in each class are as

follows:-
